He probably wanted to test its strength, so that he can use it in a crowded place more effectively. You wanted to stop him from doing this, but as soon as you arrived, you realised it was more complicated than you thought. There were more bombs, not only one. When it became clear, you realised you had absolutely no chance to defuse all of them. Moreover, they were linked. That means, if you trigger one, all of them explodes.
