The space agency had the means to send someone to the planet and the only thing they were lacking, was an astronaut who would accept the fact that he or she can’t return to Earth if it came to that. You considered this mission as a chance to become an explorer, a conquistador. It was long time ago that Columbus and other explorers and sailors set sail to discover new worlds. For a while, the Earth meant the limits of where a human can reach. After that came the Moon, but we soon realised we need to go further.
